Nie ulega wątpliwości, że Immolation to legenda death metalu. Amerykanie współtworzyli ten gatunek i wyznaczali w nim nowe szlaki, kierując swoją muzykę w najbardziej ekstremalne rejony. Dziś pierwsze pięć albumów zespołu to absolutna klasyka, a nawet późniejsze wydawnictwa – przyjęte nieco chłodniej – wciąż pozostają poza zasięgiem większości sceny.
Wydany w 2022 roku „Acts Of God” przez wielu fanów uznawany jest za powrót do formy z czasów nagrywania pierwszych albumów. Ja jednak mam z tym wydawnictwem problem i traktuję je jako dowód na to, że jednak od przybytku czasem głowa boli. „Acts Of God” to ponad 52 minuty muzyki i aż 15 utworów. Jak dla mnie materiału jest tu zwyczajnie za dużo i w okolicach 11–12 utworu przeciętny słuchacz zaczyna tracić koncentrację. A szkoda, bo to bardzo dobre kompozycje, które cierpią jedynie z powodu przesytu.
Na szczęście „Descent” przynosi wyraźną zmianę podejścia. Dziesięć utworów i niespełna 42 minuty. Na papierze – tylko 10 minut różnicy. W praktyce – kolosalna zmiana w odbiorze. Materiał jest bardziej zwarty, konkretny i po prostu lepiej „siada”. Efekt? Dla mnie to najlepszy album Amerykanów od czasów „Unholy Cult”.
Już od pierwszych sekund słychać, że zespół jest w wyśmienitej formie. Bez kompromisów, bez oglądania się za siebie. Zamiast tego dostajemy muzykę ciężką, duszną i przytłaczającą, ale jednocześnie niezwykle autentyczną. Immolation nie nagrał po prostu kolejnej płyty – nagrał demonstrację siły.
Brzmienie jest monumentalne. Gitary tworzą potężną ścianę dźwięku, która niczym walec miażdży wszystko na swojej drodze. To dźwiękowy monolit, który nie tyle atakuje, co powoli zaciska się wokół słuchacza, nie zostawiając miejsca na oddech. I choć wydaje się jednolita, bez problemu można wyłapać dziesiątki świetnych, przemyślanych riffów budujących charakterystyczny klimat dysonansowej grozy. Wystarczy posłuchać „Adversary”, aby przekonać się, jak dużo dzieje się w nieco ponad trzech minutach.
Sekcja rytmiczna działa jak perfekcyjnie naoliwiona maszyna. Perkusja jest bezlitosna – szybka, agresywna i precyzyjna – a jednocześnie świetnie podkreśla dynamikę poszczególnych utworów.
Wokal? Klasa światowa. Głęboki, przeszywający growl idealnie stapia się z warstwą instrumentalną. Dzięki temu całość brzmi spójnie i konsekwentnie buduje apokaliptyczny klimat. To nie zbiór utworów, a zwarta, duszna podróż w otchłań. To muzyka, która nie tyle wybrzmiewa, co zostaje pod skórą i wraca jeszcze długo po wybrzmieniu ostatniego riffu.
Co ważne, mimo intensywności materiał w ogóle nie męczy. Wręcz przeciwnie – wciąga coraz bardziej z każdym kolejnym odsłuchem – i natychmiast chce się wrócić na start. Zamykający krążek utwór tytułowy poprzedzony jest jedyną chwilą wytchnienia – „Banished”. „Descent” jest albumem wielowarstwowym, który nie odsłania wszystkich tajemnic już przy pierwszym przesłuchaniu.
Po niemal 40 latach na scenie Immolation wciąż potrafi brzmieć świeżo, bezkompromisowo i przekonująco. „Descent” to murowany kandydat do tytułu najlepszego deathmetalowego albumu roku. Dla fanów gatunku – pozycja obowiązkowa. Dla reszty? Idealna okazja, by sprawdzić, jak brzmi światowa ekstraklasa ekstremy. To po prostu Immolation w formie, której inni mogą tylko pozazdrościć.

There’s no doubt that Immolation is a death metal legend. The Americans co-created the genre and helped push it into its most extreme territories. Today, the band’s first five albums are considered absolute classics, and even their later releases—received a bit more lukewarmly—remain out of reach for most of the scene.
Released in 2022, “Acts Of God” is seen by many fans as a return to the band’s early-era form. I, however, have an issue with that record and treat it as proof that sometimes more really is less. At over 52 minutes and 15 tracks, it’s simply too much. Around the 11th or 12th song, the average listener is likely to lose focus. Which is a shame, because these are very strong compositions that end up getting lost in the excess.
Thankfully, “Descent” brings a clear change in approach. Ten tracks, just under 42 minutes. On paper, that’s only a 10-minute difference. In practice, it makes a huge impact. The material feels tighter, more focused, and simply works better as a whole. The result? For me, this is Immolation’s best album since “Unholy Cult”.
From the very first seconds, it’s clear the band is in outstanding form. No compromises, no looking back. Instead, we get music that is heavy, dense, and suffocating, yet still remarkably authentic. This isn’t just another album—this is a statement of strength.
The sound is monumental. The guitars form a massive wall of sound that crushes everything in its path like a steamroller. It’s a sonic monolith that doesn’t just attack—it slowly tightens its grip around the listener, leaving no room to breathe. And even though it may seem uniform at first, you can easily pick out dozens of well-crafted riffs that build Immolation’s signature atmosphere of dissonant dread. Just listen to “Adversary” to hear how much is happening in a little over three minutes.
The rhythm section operates like a perfectly oiled machine. The drumming is relentless—fast, aggressive, and precise—while still enhancing the dynamics of each track.
Vocals? World-class, as always. The deep, piercing growl blends seamlessly with the instrumentation, resulting in a cohesive and consistent whole that reinforces the album’s apocalyptic atmosphere. This is not just a collection of songs, but a compact, suffocating descent into darkness. It’s music that doesn’t simply fade out—it lingers under your skin long after the final riff.
Importantly, despite its intensity, the album never becomes exhausting. Quite the opposite—it pulls you in deeper with each listen, and as soon as it ends, you feel the urge to start it over. The closing title track is preceded by the album’s only moment of respite—“Banished”. “Descent” is a layered record that doesn’t reveal all its secrets on the first listen.
After nearly 40 years on the scene, Immolation still sounds fresh, uncompromising, and fully convincing. “Descent” is a strong contender for death metal album of the year. For fans of the genre, it’s essential listening. For everyone else, it’s a perfect opportunity to hear what the top tier of extreme metal really sounds like. This is Immolation in a form others can only aspire to reach.
